Description

Nyinabulitwa Country Resort & Safari Camp is a bird and primate conservation area for the adventurous and eco-conscious traveller. The resort is situated approximately 20 km’s outside Fort Portal in the western part of Uganda. It borders Kibale Forest National Park, one of the most beatiful tropical forests in the country with stunning bird and insect life and 13 species of primates, including a unique population of more than 1400 chimpanzees.

The forest also hosts forest elephants, buffaloes, bush pigs and duikers and a great variety of reptiles. The resort makes an ideal base for safaris to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, host to the rare mountain gorilla, Murchinson Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park with 500 bird species, Rwenzori Mountains and Semuliki National Park.

The resort itself contains a small tropical forest where different primates can be seen, including the black and white colobus monkey, red tailed monkey, grey cheeked mangabey, red colobus monkey, vervet monkey and, occasionally, migrating chimpanzees. The resort borders a small crater lake ‘Nyinabulitwa’ or ‘Mother of Lakes’, the shores of which provide habitat for an abundance of bird life, including among others hornbills, ibis, herons, sunbirds, pelicans, kingfishers, weavers, turacos, different water and predatory birds.

The resort offers guided boat trips to the forest, where a treehouse has been erected for bird and monkey viewing. In addition trails through the forest offer excellent opportunities for close encounters with both primates and birds.

The lake offers opportunities for boating, fishing and swimming, whilst the surrounding trails are excellent for mountain-biking and hiking.

Guided hiking tours to a nearby dripstone cave, a healing sulphurous spring, Mahoma Waterfalls and ‘the Top of the World’ are available on request.

In addition to accommodation in luxury cottages, the resort offers quality camping for overlanders and individuals at Nyinabulitwa Safari Camp. The campsite offers modern ablution facilities, solar power installations, as well as barbeque and dining facilities with spectacular views over the crater lake, the ‘Top of the World’ and the forest.

The kitchen serves a variety of delicious African dishes based on fresh raw materials from the resorts own garden. Guests can also prepare their own meat on the barbeque if they so wish.

At the nearby craft center run by a community womens group you will find a great variety of handcrafted products made of local natural materials. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the craft center to make a bargain.

Although the climate is tropical, the place features clear and dry air owing to the relative high altitude, and is virtually mosquito free. A mean annual rainfall of more than 1200 mm combined with fertile volcanic soils ensure lush green vegetation throughout the year.
