
Description
Directly off the Fort-Portal – Kamwenge Road, the Kanyanchu Tourist Camp in KNP is easily accessible and just 35 km from Fort-Portal town. It is elevated to provide beautiful views of the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains. With an open forest and large community of chimpanzee, Kanyanchu offers an enjoyable chimpanzee tracking experience. There is an on- going habituation project of chimpanzees and monkeys run by The Jane Goodall Institute & Uganda Wildlife Authority. All of the guides are actively involved with the Kibale Habituation Project. Visitors are assured that they are supporting a sustainable ecotourism initiative for effective conservation of the Park.

Food can be arranged with the Bigodi Women’s Group operating a canteen on site providing the
following:
- · Meals for lunch and dinner if booked in advance.
- · Drinks including sodas, bottled water, beers, tea & coffee.
- · Handicrafts and T-shirts.
The canteen operates daily. Booking for food is encouraged.

Access
The Visitor Centre is located 35 km south of Fort-Portal town, 320 km west of Kampala.
During the rainy season a 4×4 vehicle is advisable for travel from Kampala to Fort-Portal via Mubende, and from Fort-Portal to Kanyanchu.
Public transport from Kampala to Fort-Portal depart daily from 6am until about 4pm. Public transport from Fort-Portal to Kamwenge via Kanyanchu, Nkingo and Bigodi is available from the Kamwenge stage (next to the Fort-Portal market) between 8am and 5pm. Private hire vehicles (roughly 40,000 Ush) can be arranged at the Taxi Park in Fort Portal.
Additional notes
- Rules and regulations are available in the reception at the gate, and in the Visitors Centre.
- Bookings are recommended for all types of walks, especially in the high season.
- The Great Ape Guidelines are adhered to including maximum viewing time of one hour per visitor group, a minimum of 5 metres distance is enforced between visitors and chimpanzees and the minimum age of viewing chimpanzees is 16 years.
- Activities for under 18 are being developed at the centre, including fun & educational forest walks. These are being developed for local school children & visitors with families.
- Guided walks are conducted by knowledgeable Ranger Guides who offer diverse and interesting information about the plants and the animals they encounter during their walk, including all aspects of forest ecology, and of course chimpanzee behaviour.
- The number of visitors is limited to six people per group
- Gum boots are available for hire (1,000 Ush), particularly recommended during the wet season.
- Mountain bikes are available for hire (5000 Ush per day), to cover some places of interest neighbouring the Park. A map of the area is provided with suggested destinations.
